8 Best WordPress Quiz Plugins 2019

Looking for the best WordPress quiz plugin for your site?

In this post, I go hands-on with 8 great options. These plugins come in both free and premium options and can help you create everything from a serious test to a viral, Buzzfeed-style personality quiz or a customer satisfaction survey (and lots in between!).

For each quiz plugin, I'll share:

  • What types of quizzes it can create
  • How you'll build your quizzes, with real screenshots from my test site
  • What other relevant features you might care about

Let's dig in, starting with the most versatile option on this list…

Quiz and Survey Masterquiz and survey master

Quiz And Survey Master, formerly known as Quiz Master Next, is a popular WordPress quiz plugin that's available for free at WordPress.org. Beyond just generally being one of the most popular free quiz plugins, it's also maintained an impressive 4.8-star rating (out of 5) on over 650 reviews.

In addition to the free core version, there are also some free and premium extensions that pack on additional functionality.

Types Of Quizzes That You Can Build

qsm example

Quiz and Survey Master includes the largest array of question types of any plugin on this list, which gives you a lot of flexibility when it comes to the types of quizzes that you can create. You can choose from:

  • Multiple choice (radio boxes)
  • True and false
  • Open text answer
  • Multiple response (checkboxes)
  • Fill in the blank
  • Number

Each quiz can have multiple pages and you can create custom results pages based on how a user answered your quiz.

What The Quiz Builder Looks Like

The Quiz and Survey Master interface is not the most enjoyable interface that I've used, but it's plenty flexible once you get the hang of how things work.

To add new questions, you'll work in a popup:

quiz and survey master interface

And then you can manage those questions and the rest of your quiz using a series of tabs. Here's kind of what it looks like – notice the ability to create new quiz pages and also the various tabs at the top:

quiz and survey master questions

One potential negative is that you don't seem to be able to use images for the answers to multiple choice questions.

You can use images in the question, but I couldn't find any way to make them the answer. While this is a niche use, that means you won't be able to have quiz takers choose from a selection of multiple images, which is a popular approach for viral quizzes.

Other Relevant Features

Quiz and Survey Master has some neat engagement functionality for what happens after a quiz. First, you can have the plugin email the user with their results. Then, you can also let users share their results on social media, which helps with virality.

There are also just generally a ton of smaller features, which gives you a ton of flexibility. Some of the most notable are:

  • Time limits for quiz takers
  • Access restrictions (e.g. only let registered users take quizzes)
  • Progress bars
  • Different methods of grading the quiz
  • Style options
  • …plus a lot more

If you want to get more into analyzing your results, there are premium extensions for:

  • Google Analytics tracking
  • Reporting and analysis
  • Exporting results

You can also find other premium add-ons for:

  • Leaderboards
  • Certificates
  • Conditional logic
  • Email marketing service integrations
  • User dashboards

Price: Free core version at WordPress.org. Individual add-ons are $10+, or you can grab a bundle for $98.

Viral Quizviral quiz

As the name suggests, Viral Quiz is focused on helping you create…viral quizzes. No surprise there, right?

If you're looking for a WordPress quiz plugin to help you create Buzzfeed-style quizzes that will go viral on social media, this might be a good option for you.

This premium-only plugin is quite popular at CodeCanyon, where it's been purchased over 5,900 times with a 4.5-star rating on over 250 reviews.

Types Of Quizzes That You Can Build

viral quiz example

Viral Quiz is best suited to personality quizzes or other pop culture'y quizzes. For example, “how well do you know your favorite TV show?”.

When you go to create a new quiz, Viral Quiz gives you two different options:

  • Trivia quizzes
  • Personality quizzes

Unlike Quiz And Survey Master, you're more limited in the types of questions that you can create because of Viral Quiz's focus.

Everything is basically a multiple choice answer. So again – good for viral quizzes, not so good for other things.

Another thing that I like is that you can use images in both your questions and answers. This lets you have quiz-takers choose an image as their answer, instead of only text content.

You can also create different results pages based on how a user answers, which gives you a good chance to push people to share their results.

What The Quiz Builder Looks Like

The Viral Quiz builder interface is easy enough to use.

At the top, you can choose basic settings for your quiz, like which style theme you want to use and the order for your quiz questions. You can also change quiz labels, adjust social media settings (e.g. you can force people to share on Facebook to see their results), collect emails, include ads, and more:

Then, further down the page, you can add your questions and answers. Notice how you're able to include images in both the questions and the answers:

Other Relevant Features

A lot of Viral Quiz's other most unique features are all focused on that “virality” aspect of quizzes.

You can:

  • Force people to share on Facebook to see their results
  • Add custom Twitter hashtags and @mentions

Other features are:

  • Analytics
  • Email marketing service integrations
  • Built-in ad spots, including a “browser refresh” feature to boost ad pageviews

Price: Viral Quiz costs $36 with standard Envato licensing (e.g. lifetime updates).

eFormeform

eForm is a popular form builder plugin that's available at CodeCanyon. While it's not only for quizzes and surveys, eForm has some dedicated quiz functionality that makes it a great option for quizzes. Plus, you'll also be able to have it play double-duty for other types of forms, which gives you good value for your money.

Types Of Quizzes That You Can Build

eform quiz example

Because it's a full-featured form plugin, you can include a variety of fields in your quizzes. For example, you can use:

  • Multiple choice
  • Multi-select
  • True and false
  • Text answer (both short and long)

Thanks to eForm's built-in quiz functionality, you can still mark answers as “correct” and grade people's quizzes, which gives you a lot of flexibility.

What The Quiz Builder Looks Like

When you go to create a new form in eForm, you can choose from a variety of pre-built quiz templates:

eform interface

Then, it will drop you into the regular eForm interface, where you can customize your quiz or add new questions/fields:

If you click on a specific question, you'll be able to dig in further and do things like assign different point values to different answers:

There's also a dedicated quiz area where you can create different results messages based on a user's score and add a timer or stopwatch, among other settings:

Other Relevant Features

In addition to a whole heap of general form plugin functionality, eForm can also help you:

  • Add social share buttons for virality
  • Integrate Google Analytics
  • Restrict access to your quiz
  • Analyze quiz results

Quiz Cat

Quiz Cat

Quiz Cat is a lightweight WordPress quiz plugin that's a great option if you just want a streamlined way to create some basic quizzes or surveys.

If you want all the little settings and bells and whistles, you might prefer a different plugin. But if you want to create a good-looking quiz without any fuss, I like this one for its straightforward approach.

There's also a premium version that can add some of that more advanced functionality.

Types Of Quizzes That You Can Build

quiz cat example

Quiz Cat is focused exclusively on multiple choice quizzes. For each question, you can add multiple answers that the quiz-taker can choose from.

In the free version, you're able to include images in your questions, but not your answers. If you upgrade to the paid version, you'll be able to include images in your answers, as well.

That's it – I told you Quiz Cat was streamlined!

What The Quiz Builder Looks Like

Quiz Cat is super easy to use. Again – I think that's the draw.

At the top of the builder, you can add a description for your quiz. Then, you can build your questions and answers using this simple interface:

quiz cat builder

Once you've done that, you can add different results based on a user's score. Then, you're done!

Other Relevant Features

There aren't really any other features in the free version. But if you upgrade to the paid version, you'll also get:

  • Social share buttons to let people share their results
  • An option to collect email addresses and connect to popular email marketing services
  • Quiz analytics
  • Facebook Pixel integration
  • Some other smaller features, like a “retake quiz” button and the ability to shuffle questions

Price: Free at WordPress.org. Paid version starts at $29

WP Quiz

wp quiz

WP Quiz is a quiz plugin from MyThemeShop that comes in both a free and premium version.

While it's flexible in what types of quizzes you can create, WP Quiz is definitely focused toward viral quizzes like trivia and personality quizzes.

It also has a unique “flip card” option that makes for a really engaging quiz.

Types Of Quizzes That You Can Build

wp quiz example

Again, WP Quiz definitely leans more towards viral quizzes.

You'll build your quizzes using multiple choice or true and false, which makes it well suited for:

  • Personality quizzes
  • Trivia quizzes

WP Quiz also does a good job with different media types. You can include both images and videos in your questions. And you're also able to include images in your answers, which is great for viral quizzes.

The Pro version also lets you run surveys as well, including an option to create interactive list posts where visitors can vote list entries up or down.

What The Quiz Builder Looks Like

Along with Quiz Cat, I'd say WP Quiz is another one of the top plugins on this list when it comes to a streamlined, easy-to-use interface.

You'll first select your quiz type. Then, you can add as many questions and results as needed:

wp quiz builder

Here's what it looks like when you add questions and answers:

wp quiz questions

Thrive Quiz Builder

thrive quiz builder

In terms of depth of functionality, Thrive Quiz Builder is probably the most comprehensive WordPress quiz plugin on this list, with lots of behind-the-scenes options to help you grow your email list with segmented subscribers.

It's also focused more on viral-type quizzes like personality quizzes, trivia, etc.

So if you're more into the marketing benefits of quiz-building, that would be a big reason to choose Thrive Quiz Builder over the other options.

Thrive Quiz Builder also has the best-designed quiz builder of any plugin on this list. It's not necessarily the most streamlined (Quiz Cat and WP Quiz are simpler), but it is the easiest way to create complicated quizzes.

Types Of Quizzes That You Can Build

tqb example

Thrive Quiz Builder includes four different quiz types:

  • Number – “you scored 10 points
  • Percentage – “you got 55% correct”
  • Personality “your Harry Potter character is Neville Longbottom
  • Right/Wrong

Your quiz questions are multiple choice. And one neat thing is the ability to weight answers differently, which is helpful for personality quizzes.

You can also include images in both your questions and answers and create dynamic results pages depending on how someone answers.

What The Quiz Builder Looks Like

Again, Thrive Quiz Builder's form builder is super robust and detailed.

To set up the basics, Thrive Quiz Builder includes pre-built templates based on your goals. Then, it takes you through a bunch of simple setup options, like choosing your quiz type and style:

setup wizard

To actually build your quiz, you'll get this neat tree interface where you can see how all your questions and answers connect. The big benefit of this approach is that it's really easy to set up conditional logic.

For example, you can see that based on how someone answers the first question, they'll see a different second question:

tqb tree interface

To set up those connections, you just drag a line between the different questions.

Speaking of questions, here's what it looks like to actually add questions:

tqb add new question

Finally, one other feature worth pointing out is how you build your quiz results pages. Thrive Quiz Builder actually bundles in a stripped-down version of the popular Thrive Architect page builder plugin (review here) so that you can build your results pages using true drag-and-drop editing:

drag-and-drop results page builder

No other WordPress quiz plugin on this list has such a robust results page design tool.

Other Relevant Features

There are a ton of other great features to help you build quizzes:

  • A/B testing for results pages
  • Detailed conditional logic rules
  • Email marketing service integrations (including an option to segment people into different lists based on how they answer your quiz)
  • Detailed quiz analytics
  • Option to require people to submit details before they can take a quiz

Price: No free version. Starts at $67, or available as part of the Thrive Themes Membership

ARI Stream Quiz

ari-stream-quiz

ARI Stream Quiz is another WordPress quiz plugin focused on helping you create trivia quizzes and other more viral quiz types.

It has a free version at WordPress.org, as well as a paid version that tacks on some additional functionality.

Types Of Quizzes That You Can Build

ari example

In the free version, ARI Stream Quiz only does trivia quizzes. However, if you upgrade to the paid version, you'll also be able to create personality quizzes.

You also have the ability to use images in both questions and answers.

ARI Stream Quiz has a well-designed interface.

You can first set up your results pages, with different pages for different scores:

HD Quiz

hd quiz

Finally, there's HD Quiz. As the image above suggests, its goal is to make it really easy for you to create fun quizzes, like trivia or personality quizzes.

HD Quiz is 100% free, which is another nice benefit of this plugin.

Types Of Quizzes That You Can Build

hd quiz example

HD Quiz lets you create multiple choice quizzes that make a good option for trivia or personality quizzes.

You can use images in both the questions and answers, and you also have the ability to mark multiple answers as correct.

What The Quiz Builder Looks Like

HD Quiz's builder is a little unique. You'll first add your questions in a generic interface. Then, you can assign them to a quiz using the widget in the sidebar (much like you would assign a blog post to a category):

hd quiz interface

I guess the appeal of setting things up this way is that it's easy to reuse questions across multiple quizzes.

Other Relevant Features

  • Multi-page quizzes
  • Timed quizzes
  • Question/answer randomization
  • Mobile/touch-friendly design

Which WordPress Quiz Plugin Should You Choose?

Here's the part where I try to help you decide which WordPress quiz plugin will meet your needs.

Let's run through a few scenarios.

If you want the most flexible quiz plugin in terms of the types of quizzes that you can create, you should go with Quiz and Survey Master or eForm. Both allow you to go beyond the “viral quiz” and use lots of different question types to create anything you need.

If you want the simplest quiz builder, you should go with Quiz Cat or WP Quiz. Both have really streamlined interfaces that will have you creating quizzes in no time.

If you want to create trivia or personality quizzes (AKA viral quizzes), you have a lot of options. The two previous ones – Quiz Cat and WP Quiz – are both good free options. As are ARI Stream Quiz and HD Quiz.

However, if you want the best/most functionality, you won't find anything better than Thrive Quiz Builder. From the quiz builder to the drag-and-drop results page builder to the A/B testing, there's a lot to like there. However, it's a bit pricey at $67.

Viral Quiz provides a good mid-range option, as well. For just $36, you can create some great-looking quizzes that look almost exactly like the quizzes that Buzzfeed has had so much success with.

And that wraps up our list! If you have any other thoughts or questions, leave a comment and we'll try to help.
