2. Documentation

a. Child theme

Child themes are a great tool for doing code customizations. If you are planning on doing extensive changes, we recommend that you use one.

Resources:

  1. A premade child theme for Sydney Pro is available here.
  2. If you're interested in the topic and want to learn more about child themes, go here.

b. Passing Customizer settings from Sydney to Sydney Pro

If you’ve made a lot of changes from the Customizer while using Sydney and you would like to pass them over in Sydney Pro, follow these easy steps:

  1. install and activate this plugin (while having the free version of Sydney active);
  2. go to Appearance > Customize > Export/Import and click on Export. You will automatically download a file;
  3. open that file in any text editor (like Notepad on Windows, TextWrangler on Mac) and do a Find&Replace (Ctrl+H in Notepad, ⌘F in TextWrangler) for s:6:"sydney" and replace with s:13:"sydney-pro-ii". Save the file;
  4. switch to Sydney Pro and visit again Customize > Export/Import. This time you will upload the file you’ve just edited. That’s it, you’re free to deactivate and remove the plugin now.

Note: If you plan on using the the child theme from step a), you can just re-use the export plugin and export your settings from Sydney Pro into your Sydney Pro child theme.

c. Slider header setup

Sydney Pro provides header integration for the Crelly Slider plugin. This way you can replace the default slider with a more complex one.

Resources:

  1. Our quick start guide for Crelly Slider is here.
  2. If you want to import the slider from our demo site, you can get it here.

d. Video header setup

While using Sydney Pro, you can use a self-hosted video for your header.

Steps:

  1. From your admin area, go to Media and upload your video in MP4, WEBM and OGV formats. It is not mandatory to upload all formats for your video but this is the way you will get the best cross browser support.
  1. Go to Customize > Header Area > Video and add the links to your video. You can also upload a poster image if you want.
  2. Next go to Customize > Header Area > Header Type and select Video for your homepage and if you want for the rest of your pages also.

e. Changing the credits

To change the footer credits you need to go to Customize > Sydney Pro options > Footer credits.

There you can add your own credits for your company. HTML is also supported in so for example you can make your credits include a link:
©YourCompany. Find out more <a href="http://example.org/">here</a>

f. Display your contact info in the header

If you want to display some contact info in your header, simply go to Customize > Sydney Pro options > Header Contact Info, fill out your info, style if needed and then activate.

g. Adding a global widget area under the header

A global widget area works great if you want to communicate a message throughout your whole site.

Steps:

  1. Go to Customize > Sydney Pro options > Extra Widget Area to activate and style your new widget area.
  1. Go to Appearance > Widgets and add the widget you want in the Below Header Area that you can see in the image below.

Also in Customize > Sydney Pro Options you can find more sets of options for styling buttons, styling the widget titles and for adjusting the layout for the single employees and single project pages.

i. Single post/page options

To style posts or pages individually, simply go to Edit Post (Edit Page) and find the options illustrated in the screenshot below

Four extra widgets are available in Sydney Pro.

Timeline:

  1. Add the post title and content just as you normally would, then scroll down and fill the timeline info you need like it is shown below:
  1. Add the timeline widget in the Page Builder, just like you did for all other widgets.

Contact:

Just like you did for all other widgets, locate the Sydney FP: Contact widget and add it in the Page Builder, then start configuring it:

Employees&Latest News

You already know the original versions of these two widgets from the free theme. The difference between the original versions is that now you can display the employees widget in a grid and the latest news widget in a carousel. Look for Sydney FP: Employees B and Sydney FP: Latest News B in your widget list.
