9 Best OptinMonster Alternatives 2020

Best OptinMonster Alternatives, featured image

Looking for the best OptinMonster alternative to grow your email list and promote offers?

While OptinMonster is a great tool, it’s definitely a bit pricey, especially if you’re using it on multiple sites. Plus, it has other limitations when it comes to design and how tightly it integrates with WordPress.

Whether you’re looking for a cheaper OptinMonster alternative or just a slightly different approach, we’ve got something for you on this list.

In total, we’ve collected 9 different OptinMonster alternatives. Some offer near feature parity, while others approach things in a different way. And oh yeah, pretty much all of them are cheaper than OptinMonster, too!

Let’s dig in…

Thrive Leads

Thrive Leads

Thrive Leads is a popular WordPress list building plugin from Thrive Themes. It packs in a lot of features that OptinMonster has, such as a drag-and-drop visual template builder, integrations with popular email marketing services, built-in A/B testing, and a solid set of targeting/triggering rules.

You can learn more in our full Thrive Leads review.

Thrive Leads Key Features

  • Lots of different opt-in form types, including popups, screen-fillers, scroll mats, notification bars, and more.
  • Tons of pre-designed opt-in templates.
  • Visual, drag-and-drop layout builder based on the Thrive Architect page builder plugin.
  • Built-in A/B testing to compare different designs.
  • Solid targeting rules.
  • Built-in analytics.
  • Integrations with 30+ email marketing services.
  • A good number of trigger options, including exit intent.

Where Thrive Leads Excels

One of the areas where Thrive Leads really does well in comparison to OptinMonster is its visual builder. You can build your popups with a drag-and-drop visual interface, which is based on the popular Thrive Architect page builder plugin.

Thrive Leads also offers solid 1:1 parity with OptinMonster in other areas such as built-in A/B testing and SmartLinks to display different popups to users who have already subscribed to your email lists.

Where Thrive Leads Can’t Match OptinMonster

I think one area where Thrive Leads falls a little behind OptinMonster is in targeting rules.

While you still get a good list of targeting rules, it doesn’t quite match the depth/flexibility that you get with OptinMonster. Still, you get all the main rules, so most people probably won’t notice a difference here.

Pricing

Thrive Leads only comes in a premium version. The price depends on how many sites you want to use Thrive Leads on:

  • 1 site – $67
  • 5 sites – $97
  • 15 sites – $147

Or, you can get it as part of the all-inclusive Thrive Themes Membership, which costs $19 per month (paid annually).

Convert Pro

Convert Pro

Convert Pro is probably the most 1:1 OptinMonster alternative on this list. Basically, if someone took OptinMonster and ported it into a WordPress plugin, it would probably look like Convert Pro.

You get access to a visual drag-and-drop interface, built-in A/B testing, some of the most detailed targeting rules on this list, and lots of pre-built templates.

Overall, this is definitely one of the top OptinMonster alternatives on this list.

Convert Pro Key Features

  • Pre-built popup templates.
  • Drag-and-drop visual design interface.
  • Detailed targeting rules, including page-level targeting, referrer detection, and more.
  • Lots of triggers, including exit intent.
  • Built-in A/B testing and multivariate testing.
  • Integrations with 35+ other services, including big names like Mailchimp, Aweber, and more.
  • Dedicated mobile design editor to control responsive design.
  • Google Analytics integration to track your stats in Google Analytics. You can also import this data into WordPress so that you can see it in your WordPress dashboard.

Where Convert Pro Excels

I don’t necessarily see any specific areas where Convert Pro beats out OptinMonster, but that’s definitely not a criticism.

Again, I think Convert Pro offers the best feature parity with OptinMonster. So while it might not do anything notably better than OptinMonster, it also doesn’t do anything notably worse, which brings me to the next point…

Where Convert Pro Can’t Match OptinMonster

I don’t see any glaring weaknesses when looking at Convert Pro as an OptinMonster alternative. There are obviously small differences here and there, but overall, I think this is one of the best options if you just want a cheaper, native WordPress alternative to OptinMonster.

Pricing

While Convert Pro has a lot of similarities to OptinMonster, one big difference is the pricing — Convert Pro is a lot cheaper, especially if you plan to use it on multiple sites.

Convert Pro offers both one-year and lifetime licenses. Either way, you’ll be able to use Convert Pro on unlimited websites, which is a great value if you run multiple sites. Here are the plans:

  • 1-year license – $99
  • Lifetime license – $399

Elementor Popup Builder

Elementor Popup Builder

Elementor is one of the most popular WordPress page builders out there. While the free version at WordPress.org is focused on building page content, the premium version, Elementor Pro, offers a dedicated Popup Builder, which is why it makes a stellar OptinMonster alternative.

Because the core plugin is a visual page builder, Elementor really excels at giving you detailed design flexibility. Also for the same reason, Elementor falls behind when it comes to built-in analytics and A/B testing — more specifically, those features don’t exist.

So if you value design flexibility, Elementor Pro is a great OptinMonster alternative. But if statistics and A/B testing are important to you, you might prefer a different tool.

You can learn more in our full Elementor Pro review.

Elementor Key Features

  • Drag-and-drop visual popup design interface. Again, it has the most design flexibility of any tool on this list.
  • Use any Elementor widget in your popups.
  • Use the Form widget to connect to ~10 popular email marketing services. Or, use Zapier webhooks to connect to others.
  • 100+ pre-built popup templates.
  • Detailed targeting rules to display popups on specific content.
  • Solid list of triggers, including exit intent.
  • Access to all the other Elementor Pro features, including the Theme Builder.

Where Elementor Excels

Again, Elementor definitely beats out OptinMonster when it comes to design flexibility. While OptinMonster’s new drag-and-drop visual interface is good, Elementor is literally one of the best when it comes to visual drag-and-drop design on WordPress.

Elementor is also more flexible than OptinMonster because you can use all the regular Elementor widgets. For example, you can create login/registration forms or promote any type of offer.

Where Elementor Can’t Match OptinMonster

As I mentioned in the intro, the big drawback with Elementor Popup Builder is analytics and optimization.

There just…aren’t any. Elementor doesn’t have built-in analytics, nor does it have A/B testing. While there are workarounds to those issues, they’re definitely not as convenient as OptinMonster’s analytics and A/B testing.

Pricing

Elementor Popup Builder is available in the regular Elementor Pro add-on. There are three plans, all of which are full-featured:

  • 1 site – $49
  • 3 sites – $99
  • 1,000 sites – $199

Bloom

Bloom

Bloom is an email list building tool from Elegant Themes, the developers of the popular Divi WordPress theme/plugin.

It helps you grow your email list with tons of pre-built templates, 19+ email marketing integrations, and some unique WordPress-specific triggers.

It’s not as flexible as OptinMonster when it comes to design and targeting rules, but it does have some nice features and makes a great option if you want something a little simpler than OptinMonster.

Bloom Key Features

  • 100+ pre-built popup templates.
  • Customize the text and colors of those templates (but no drag-and-drop editor).
  • 6 different popup types, including slide-ins, inline forms, and content lockers.
  • Page-level targeting rules.
  • 6 triggers (but no exit intent).
  • Integrations with 19+ email marketing services.
  • Built-in A/B testing.
  • Built-in statistics and a well-designed dashboard for viewing stats.

Where Bloom Excels

One thing Bloom offers that OptinMonster doesn’t is some unique WordPress-specific triggers. For example, you can trigger a popup after a user leaves a comment on your site or makes a purchase on WooCommerce. There are some neat use cases there, such as displaying a CTA to engage users after they leave a comment.

Bloom is also a little simpler because all you need to do is customize the text and colors of a pre-built template to launch your popup. But that’s also a negative…

Where Bloom Can’t Match OptinMonster

One big area where Bloom falls behind OptinMonster is visual design options. With Bloom, you can only choose from pre-selected templates and change the colors/content.

If you don’t need detailed design options, that might be fine. But if you love OptinMonster’s visual drag-and-drop editor, you might be disappointed with Bloom’s design options.

Additionally, Bloom doesn’t have the popular exit intent popup trigger that you get with OptinMonster.

Pricing

Bloom is part of the Elegant Themes membership, which gets you access to all of Elegant Themes’ products (including Divi and Monarch). You can either purchase a yearly or lifetime license. Both licenses let you use Bloom on unlimited WordPress sites:

  • 1-year license – $89
  • Lifetime license – $249

Ninja Popups

Ninja Popups

Ninja Popups is one of the most popular WordPress popup plugins at CodeCanyon, where it’s been purchased over 36,000 times while maintaining a good-not-great 4.34-star rating on over 1,600 reviews.

At just $27, it’s one of the best cheap OptinMonster alternatives. It also has a stellar feature list, though I don’t find the interface to be as user-friendly as OptinMonster.

Ninja Popups Key Features

  • Tons of pre-built popup templates.
  • Drag-and-drop popup editor, though I don’t find it as user-friendly as some of the other tools on this list.
  • Page-level targeting.
  • Popup scheduling.
  • Built-in statistics.
  • Built-in A/B testing.
  • Plenty of triggers, including exit intent.
  • 10+ different popup alignment options.
  • 40+ integrations with the most popular email marketing services.
  • Content locker popups.

Where Ninja Popups Excels

I think the big area where Ninja Popups excels is its price. The interface isn’t as user-friendly as OptinMonster or some of the other tools on this list, but it still gets you lots of the same features you find in OptinMonster, for just $27 one-time price and lifetime updates.

So if budget is your number one concern, Ninja Popups is a stellar option.

Where Ninja Popups Can’t Match OptinMonster

As I mentioned above, I just generally don’t find the Ninja Popups interface to be as user-friendly/pleasant as OptinMonster.

Additionally, Ninja Popups doesn’t offer as many targeting options as you get with OptinMonster.

Pricing

Ninja Popups costs just $27 with standard Envato licensing. That is:

  • Use on a single site.
  • Lifetime updates.
  • 6 months of support.

Icegram

Icegram

Icegram comes in two versions — a limited free version at WordPress.org with basic features and a premium version with a lot more flexibility.

Since you’re looking for an OptinMonster alternative, you’ll probably be more interested in the premium version as it offers better feature parity with OptinMonster at a slightly lower price.

For that reason, I’ll focus on the premium version.

Icegram Key Features

  • 100+ pre-built popup themes.
  • Built-in statistics.
  • Plenty of trigger rules, including exit intent.
  • Built-in A/B testing.
  • Geotargeting.
  • Page-level targeting.

Where Icegram Excels

Beyond price, I don’t think there are any major areas where Icegram beats out OptinMonster.

Still, the price is definitely a big one, which is why Icegram gets a spot on this list.

Where Icegram Can’t Match OptinMonster

One weakness in Icegram is that you don’t get a lot of flexibility to customize the designs. While you do get access to 100+ themes, you can’t build your own custom designs using drag-and-drop that OptinMonster and some other tools on this list allow.

Pricing

There are three ways to get access to the premium version of Icegram.

First, there are two premium options with slightly different feature lists, both of which you’ll pay for on a yearly basis:

  • Pro – $97 per year.
  • Max – $147 per year.

Both plans let you use Icegram on a single site.

Or, for the best value, you can pay $247 for lifetime access to the Max plan.

OptiMonk

OptiMonk

Unlike all the previous OptinMonster alternatives on this list, OptiMonk is a platform-independent tool just like OptinMonster. That is, it’s not a dedicated WordPress plugin, though it does integrate with WordPress and other platforms.

Unlike OptinMonster, though, OptiMonk is specifically focused on helping eCommerce stores.

So if you have an eCommerce store, you’ll get lots of nice features to help you grow your lists, increase revenue, and reduce cart abandonment.

If you’re not running an eCommerce store, you’ll probably prefer a different tool on this list.

OptiMonk Key Features

  • 200+ pre-built templates.
  • Visual drag-and-drop popup editor.
  • Shopping cart abandonment detection.
  • Targeting rules based on the items in a shopper’s cart (and lots of other rules, too).
  • Add to cart notification bars.
  • Lots of trigger rules, including exit intent.
  • Multiple popup types, including popup, fullscreen, nanobar, luck wheel, and scratchcard.
  • Built-in analytics.
  • Built-in A/B testing.
  • Integrations with most popular eCommerce platforms, including WooCommerce, Shopify, BigCommerce, and more.

Where OptiMonk Excels

Because of its focus on eCommerce, OptiMonk just generally excels over OptinMonster when it comes to eCommerce-specific promotions.

For example, it has dedicated templates/features to help you reduce cart abandonment and you can target popups based on the items in a shopper’s cart. It also includes unique popup types such as a lucky wheel.

Where OptiMonk Can’t Match OptinMonster

Because OptiMonk is focused on eCommerce, it’s not as good of an OptinMonster alternative if you’re not running an eCommerce store.

Pricing

OptiMonk offers a limited free plan for up to 3,000 page views per month. After that, paid plans start at $29 per month, though you’ll get access to different features depending on the tier that you pick.

So unlike the other tools, OptiMonk is actually a little bit more expensive than OptinMonster. Still, those extra eCommerce features can probably pay for themselves if you use them right.

WP Subscribe Pro

WP Subscribe Pro

WP Subscribe Pro is a nice lightweight plugin for growing your email list. It doesn’t have as much functionality as OptinMonster, but it is super simple and easy to set up.

So if you found OptinMonster a little too complicated/feature-rich for your needs, WP Subscribe Pro might be a good alternative that’s easy on the wallet.

But if you want something that can offer the same depth of functionality as OptinMonster, you’ll probably prefer a tool like Thrive Leads or Convert Pro.

WP Subscribe Pro Key Features

  • Pre-built popup templates.
  • Customize colors and content.
  • Page-level targeting.
  • Solid set of trigger options, including exit intent.
  • Integrations with most popular email marketing services.
  • Cookie settings to control how often users see popups.

Where WP Subscribe Pro Excels

WP Subscribe Pro excels in two areas.

First, it’s just generally a lot simpler than OptinMonster. So if you don’t need all of OptinMonster’s advanced features, you might prefer WP Subscribe Pro.

Second, it’s super affordable, starting at just $19 for use on a single site.

Where WP Subscribe Pro Can’t Match OptinMonster

WP Subscribe Pro just generally doesn’t have as many features as OptinMonster when it comes to:

  • Design flexibility.
  • Targeting rules.
  • Analytics/A/B testing.

If you want something simple, that might be fine. But if you want feature parity with OptinMonster, WP Subscribe Pro probably isn’t a good choice.

Pricing

There’s a limited free version of WP Subscribe at WordPress.org.

After that, paid plans start at just $19 for use on a single site and range up to $49 for an unlimited site license.

Popup Maker

Popup Maker

Finally, we have Popup Maker, which is a hugely popular WordPress-specific popup solution. According to WordPress.org, it’s active on over 400,000 sites while maintaining an impressive 4.9-star rating on over 3,400 reviews.

Popup Maker really excels when it comes to WordPress-specific targeting/trigger rules, though its popup design interface isn’t as user-friendly/flexible as OptinMonster.

It comes in both a free version at WordPress.org as well as a number of premium extensions.

Popup Maker Key Features

  • Multiple popup display locations, including notification bars, floating sticky popups, slide-ins, and more.
  • Integrations with popular WordPress form plugins such as Ninja Forms, Gravity Forms, and more.
  • Integrations with popular email marketing services, including Mailchimp and Aweber.
  • Detailed targeting rules, including WordPress-specific conditions.
  • Lots of trigger rules, including exit intent.
  • Add-ons for different popup uses, including age gates, login popups, idle logout, and more.
  • Analytics.

Where Popup Maker Excels

One big advantage that Popup Maker has over OptinMonster is in its WordPress-specific rules.

For example, you can target WordPress user roles, whether or not a user is logged in to WordPress, and whether or not a user has left a comment.

Because OptinMonster is platform-independent, it doesn’t offer this level of WordPress-specific targeting.

Where Popup Maker Can’t Match OptinMonster

Popup Maker is a lot weaker than OptinMonster in the design department. You don’t get a visual drag-and-drop builder, and it’s not as easy to create a good-looking popup without custom CSS.

Additionally, Popup Maker lacks A/B testing.

Pricing

The core Popup Maker plugin is available for free at WordPress.org.

After that, you can purchase individual extensions at $15+ each, for use on a single site. Or, you can get a bundle of all extensions starting at $192 per year that allows use on unlimited sites.

Which is the Best OptinMonster Alternative for You?

Now for the important question — which one of these alternatives to OptinMonster is right for your needs?

Well, I think that depends on what you’re looking for.

If you want near-feature parity with OptinMonster just at a lower price, Convert Pro would be my number one recommendation, with Thrive Leads close behind.

Both can get you almost all the same features as OptinMonster, just at much lower price points (especially, if you plan to use Convert Pro on multiple sites).

If the $60+ price tag for those tools is still out of your reach, Ninja Popups is a solid alternative, though it’s not as user-friendly as Convert Pro or Thrive Leads.

If you want an alternative to OptinMonster for a reason other than price, here are some specific situations where one tool might be better than the others. If you…

  • Want the most design flexibility, go with Elementor Pro.
  • Are running an eCommerce store, consider OptiMonk.
  • Want WordPress-specific targeting rules (for example, targeting specific user roles), check out Popup Maker.
  • Just want a really simple list building tool, give WP Subscribe Pro a look.
